Nothing can separate

The unbreakable love

Watch a man in a borrowed room dictate a sentence as if he were daring the whole universe to defeat it. Paul begins to build a list, and he builds it like a fortress wall, stone on stone. Death, he says, and then life, as though to leave nothing on either side of the grave. Angels, then rulers, the seen powers and the unseen. Things present, things to come, the whole anxious weight of the future thrown onto the pile. Powers, height, depth, the dizzy top and the dark bottom of all existence. And then, in case some clever enemy is still searching for the one loophole, he sweeps the whole of reality into a single phrase and slams the gate: nor any other created thing. None of it, he concludes, can separate us from the love of God in Christ. Jesus had already said the same in a quieter key, holding up His open hand: my sheep are here, and no one is able to snatch them out. After an upheaval that shook loose everything that could be shaken, the soul finally finds the floor, and the floor is a grip that will not let go.

Neither death, nor life... will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul, to the Romans — Romans 8:38-39 (WEB)

John 10:28

I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

After everything that came loose in your upheaval, here is bedrock, and it is worth standing on slowly. Nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ. Paul does not leave the claim vague; he names every candidate one by one. Death. Life. Powers you can see and powers you cannot. The future you dread. And then, in case he missed one, anything that has ever been created at all. He rules them out, every one. Jesus puts it in your hands as an image: you are held, and no one is strong enough to tear you out of His grip. Notice where your security actually rests. It is not your grip on God, which trembles and slips on your worst days, the days you cannot feel Him at all. It is His grip on you, which does not slip on any day. That is the whole difference. Rest there. The cord that holds you was never yours to keep tight. It cannot be cut.
