What the fire is for · Malachi 3

The refiner's fire

The refiner sits down

Malachi's picture of the coming God is not the one we expect. We brace for a judge with a gavel; what we get is a metalworker who pulls up a stool. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. The detail that he sits is the whole point — refining is patient work. The smith heats the ore and watches; as the metal melts, the impurities rise to the surface as a grey scum, and he draws them off; he heats it again, and again, until the surface goes so clear he can see his own face in it. Then he knows it is done.

That is what the fire of an upheaval is for. It is not God losing His temper and burning things down; it is God sitting down to refine. I have refined you, He says through Isaiah, but not as silver — I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction. The furnace is not the opposite of being chosen; it is the proof of it. The heat that feels like destruction is the heat that draws the dross to the surface so it can finally be taken away.

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver.

Malachi — Malachi 3:3 (WEB)

Isaiah 48:10

Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction.

If you can believe the fire is a refiner's fire, everything about your upheaval changes — not the heat, but the meaning of the heat. Dross only rises when the metal is hot enough; the very thing that feels like ruin is the thing surfacing what needs to go. The impurities you never knew were in you — the false securities, the pride, the lukewarm compromises — do not appear in comfort. They appear in the furnace, where at last they can be drawn off.

And the refiner sits. He does not walk away and forget the crucible on the fire; he watches it the whole time, and he knows exactly how much heat the metal can take, and he stops the moment he can see his face in the surface. That is the promise hidden in the fire: it is measured, it is attended, and it has an end. He is refining you for a clarity you cannot reach any other way — until what reflects back from your life is the face of the One sitting at the fire.
