Let your light shine

Formation made visible

Jesus tells his followers what the formed life is for: let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. The character of Christ formed in us is not meant to be hidden away as a private spiritual achievement; it is meant to shine — to be visible, to light up the world around us, and to point beyond ourselves to God.

This balances an emphasis we have rightly stressed throughout — that much of formation is hidden, secret, unconcerned with being seen. Both are true. We do not pursue holiness in order to be seen; that would corrupt it into performance. And yet the genuine character of Christ, grown in secret, cannot finally be hidden; like a lamp on a stand, it gives light to everyone in the house. The light is not lit to be admired, but it is lit to be seen.

Notice the crucial direction of the glory. The point of the visible good works is not that people would admire us, but that they would glorify our Father in heaven. The formed life points away from itself to God; when others see real Christlikeness, they are meant to be drawn not to the person but to the God who made them so. This is the difference between letting your light shine and showing off: one points to God, the other to self. Let the character God forms in you shine — not for your glory, but for his.

The Invitation

Let the character God forms in you shine outward — visible good works that point others not to you but to the glory of your Father in heaven.

Philippians 2:15

That you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish, among whom you are seen as lights in the world.

We can over-correct from hidden formation into hiding the light entirely, or else let it shine for our own glory. The interior work is to hold both truths Jesus joins — that we do not pursue holiness to be seen, yet genuine Christlikeness cannot finally be hidden and is meant to shine — and to keep the glory pointed where it belongs, toward the Father, which is the line between letting your light shine and showing off.

A Practice to Try

This week, let your light shine without seeking the spotlight: do good works visibly where they will help and encourage others, and deliberately direct the glory to God, so that what people see draws them to the Father rather than to you.

The tempter works both edges of this truth — burying the light so it warms no one, or polishing it into a performance staged for your own glory. But genuine Christlikeness, grown in secret, cannot finally be hidden, and a life that lets it shine toward the Father draws people to God instead of self, lighting a corner of the world that was meant to stay dark.

We have rightly stressed that much of formation is hidden and secret, unconcerned with being seen. Jesus adds the balancing truth: let your light shine before others. The character of Christ grown in us is not meant to be buried as a private achievement; like a lamp on a stand, it inevitably gives light, visible to everyone around.

The two truths hold together. We do not pursue holiness in order to be seen, which would corrupt it into performance; yet genuine Christlikeness, grown in secret, cannot finally be hidden, and is meant to shine. Everything turns on the direction of the glory. The visible good works are meant to draw people not to us but to our Father in heaven. That is the line between letting your light shine and showing off: one points to God, the other to self. Does the character God is forming in you shine outward to his glory, or do you either hide it or display it for your own?

  1. Do I hide the light, or let it shine for my own glory?
  2. Does the good God forms in me point others to him, or to me?
  3. Where could my light shine this week to the Father's glory?
A Prayer to Carry

Lord, I either hide the light or let it shine for myself. Let the character you form in me shine outward in good works, and keep the glory pointed to you, so that what others see draws them to my Father in heaven, not to me. Amen.
