Suffering's strange fruit
From trial to hope
Paul makes a claim that sounds almost reckless: we rejoice in our sufferings. Not merely endure them, not grit our teeth through them, but rejoice in them. And he is not being naive or masochistic; he gives a reason, tracing a chain of cause and effect that suffering sets in motion. Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance produces character; and character produces hope.
Notice the links in the chain. Suffering, when met with faith rather than despair, builds perseverance — the capacity to endure, the staying power we never develop in ease. Perseverance, over time, forges character — a tested, proven, durable soul that has been through the fire and held. And character, in turn, gives birth to hope — a hope that is no longer wishful thinking but battle-tested confidence, because it has seen God prove faithful in the worst of times.
This is why Paul can rejoice. He is not rejoicing in the pain itself, but in what the pain is producing — knowing that God is forging, link by link, something precious that could be made no other way. Each link depends on the one before; skip the suffering, and the whole chain that ends in hope is never forged. So we can rejoice not because the suffering is good, but because the God who works all things for good is producing, through it, perseverance, character, and a hope that will not disappoint.

Rejoice not in suffering itself but in what God forges through it — the chain of perseverance, character, and battle-tested hope that ease could never produce.

Inside a trial the mind locks onto the raw pain and sees only damage, so suffering looks purely destructive and rejoicing sounds like denial. The interior work is to read down the chain instead — suffering to perseverance, perseverance to character, character to hope — and to trust the God forging those links one by one, knowing the tested hope they end in has no shortcut that skips the trial.
This week, in your trial, look down the chain rather than only at the pain: name how this suffering could be building perseverance, perseverance forging character, character producing hope — and rejoice, not in the suffering, but in what God is producing through it.
Keep your eyes on the raw pain alone and suffering reads as nothing but ruin, and despair feels like the only honest response. But the trial is the first link in a chain that runs to a hope that will not disappoint — and a soul that trusts the forging receives from its hardship the very thing ease could never give.

Can you trust the chain enough to rejoice, not in the suffering, but in what God is producing through it?

Lord, to rejoice in suffering sounds impossible, until I see what you forge through it: perseverance, character, hope. Help me trust the chain. Let me rejoice not in the pain but in what you are producing, a tested hope that will not disappoint. Amen.
