Stage 7The Tempter's StrategyDay 196
The final word over the enemy · 1 John 4

Greater is he who is in you

The victory already won

After a long, sober look at the enemy and his strategies, John speaks the word that must have the last say, and he speaks it tenderly: you are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. The enemy is real, but he is not the greatest power in the equation. The One who lives in you is greater — and that changes everything.

Notice that John does not say you will overcome, but that you have overcome — the decisive victory is already accomplished. We do not fight toward a victory still in doubt; we fight from a victory already won by Christ at the cross and the empty tomb. The enemy is a defeated foe, and the Spirit who dwells in the believer is infinitely greater than the spirit at work in the world.

This is the note on which the whole stage must end, lest sober watchfulness curdle into fear. We take the enemy seriously, but we do not tremble before him, because greater is he who is in you. And this truth becomes a lifeline for what lies ahead, when the path leads into the dark valley and God himself seems to withdraw. Even there, in the desolation to come, the One who is greater is still in you. Walk on, not in fear of the enemy, but in the strength of the greater One within.

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.

The Invitation

Let the final word over the enemy be confidence, not fear — for greater is he who is in you, and the victory is already won.

Romans 8:37

In all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

A long, sober look at the enemy can curdle into dread — a soul seeing a demon behind every difficulty and forgetting, in the staring, who actually holds the power. The interior work is to let John's word have the last say, that greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world, holding alertness and fearlessness together and fighting from a victory already won rather than toward one still in doubt.

A Practice to Try

This week, when fear of the enemy or of your own weakness rises, declare the greater truth: greater is he who is in me, and in Christ I am already more than a conqueror. Take the enemy seriously, but refuse to tremble, standing in the victory already won.

Dread serves the enemy every bit as well as drowsy neglect, for a soul paralyzed by fear of him fights no better than one asleep. Stand both watchful and unafraid, fighting from a finished victory in the strength of the greater One within, and a defeated foe loses his last hold over you.

A long study of the enemy's strategies can leave a soul anxious and hyper-vigilant, seeing a demon behind every difficulty and forgetting who actually holds the power. John speaks the word that puts the enemy in his place: greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. The adversary is real and must be taken seriously, but he is not supreme, and the Spirit within the believer is greater by far.

This is why our watchfulness need never become fear. The victory is not something we are anxiously fighting toward but something already won, in which we now stand; we are not potential conquerors but, in Christ, more than conquerors already. Hold both truths together as this stage ends: be sober and alert toward a real enemy, yet unafraid, because the One in you is greater. And carry that confidence into the harder country ahead, where God will sometimes seem absent — for even there, he who is in you is greater than all that opposes you.

  1. Has studying the enemy left me anxious and afraid rather than confident?
  2. Do I fight toward a victory in doubt, or from one already won?
  3. Can I be both sober toward the enemy and unafraid because of the One in me?
A Prayer to Carry

Lord, the long look at the enemy can leave me fearful, forgetting who holds the power. Greater is he who is in me than he who is in the world. Let me be alert but unafraid, fighting from a victory already won, more than a conqueror through you who loved me. Amen.
