Apart from me, nothing
Jesus on the vine and branches
Jesus gives his disciples an image of total dependence: I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. A branch has no life or fruit of its own; everything flows from its connection to the vine. Severed from it, the branch can do nothing — not a little, but nothing.
This is the most radical statement of dependence in Scripture, and it is aimed straight at the self-sufficient leader. Apart from me you can do nothing. Not apart from me you can do less, or struggle more — nothing. All the activity a leader generates while disconnected from Christ is, in eternal terms, fruitless. The call is to abide — to stay connected, dependent, drawing life from the vine — because that, not raw effort, is what bears fruit. The busy leader who has stopped abiding is producing nothing that lasts, however impressive the activity looks.
“It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”
— Paul, on Christ living in him — Galatians 2:20 (WEB)
A branch bears fruit only by connection to the vine. Apart from Christ a leader can do nothing of lasting value, however busy the activity.
“I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
Jesus calls the self-sufficient to abide, not just achieve. A leader formed here draws life from the vine rather than his own effort. The inner work is staying connected and dependent, not merely productive.
Abide in Christ as the source of all fruitfulness, not just your effort. Prioritize connection over raw activity. Lead from dependence, knowing disconnected busyness bears nothing that lasts.
Busy leaders generate impressive activity while disconnected from the vine. The blind spot is mistaking effort and output for fruit that only abiding produces.
Notice where you are generating activity disconnected from Christ. This week, prioritize abiding before achieving.
'Apart from me you can do nothing' — not less, not harder, nothing. All the activity a leader generates while disconnected from Christ is, in eternal terms, fruitless.
Are you abiding in the vine, or generating disconnected activity that, apart from him, amounts to nothing?
