Theme 7Shepherding & Developing PeopleDay 205
On timely provision · The teaching of Jesus

Food in due season

The faithful and wise servant

Jesus describes the faithful and wise servant by a single task: the one his master set over the household to give them their food at the proper time. Not occasionally, not whenever convenient, but in due season — when it is actually needed. The faithfulness is measured not merely by provision, but by timely provision.

Leaders can provide the right thing at the wrong time and starve their people anyway. The encouragement that comes too late, the correction that arrives after the damage is done, the resources released only once the crisis has passed — right food, wrong season. Shepherding is partly a matter of timing: sensing what people need now and providing it now. The wise servant is not just generous; he is timely, reading the season of those in his care and feeding them accordingly.

The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season.

The Principle

Faithfulness is measured by timely provision, not just provision. The wise servant reads the season of those in his care and feeds them what they need, when they need it.

Matthew 24:45

Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has set over his household, to give them their food in due season?

Jesus ties faithfulness to feeding people at the right time. A leader formed here attends to timing, not just to generosity, sensing what people need now. The inner work is reading seasons so provision arrives when it can still help.

Provide what people need in due season — encouragement, correction, resources — before the moment passes. Read the season your team is in and feed it accordingly. Treat timing as part of faithfulness, not an afterthought.

Leaders deliver the right thing at the wrong time and assume generosity is enough. The blind spot is providing out of season, so good provision arrives too late to feed anyone.

This Week's Practice

Name what your team most needs from you this season. This week, provide it now, before it would arrive too late.

You can give the right thing at the wrong time and starve people anyway — the encouragement too late, the correction after the damage, the help that arrives once the crisis has passed.

What does your team need from you right now, in this season — and are you providing it, or will it arrive too late?
