Theme 4Wisdom & DiscernmentDay 104
Egypt, interpreting Pharaoh's dream · The sojourn in Egypt

See trouble coming

Joseph prepares for famine

Joseph not only interprets Pharaoh's dream of coming famine; he immediately moves from foresight to preparation. Let Pharaoh appoint overseers, he says, and store up grain during the seven years of plenty as a reserve for the seven years of famine. He sees the danger coming and builds the shelter before the storm arrives.

Proverbs commends exactly this: a prudent man sees danger and hides himself, but the simple pass on and suffer for it. Wisdom is not just reacting well to crises; it is the foresight to anticipate them and prepare, while the naive walk blindly into trouble that was visible all along.

The Principle

Foresee trouble and prepare for it. The prudent leader, like Joseph, sees danger coming and takes shelter, while the naive walk into it.

Proverbs 22:3

A prudent man sees danger, and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

Joseph moved from foresight to preparation, building the reserve before the famine. A leader formed here looks ahead, anticipates trouble, and prepares in advance rather than only reacting. He uses seasons of plenty to ready for seasons of want. The inner work is the foresight that prepares before the storm.

Anticipate likely trouble and prepare for it before it arrives, especially in good times. Build reserves and contingencies during seasons of plenty. Resist purely reactive leadership that only handles crises once they hit. Train your team to see danger forming and take shelter early.

Leaders lead reactively, handling crises only when they hit, and fail to prepare for trouble that was visible in advance. The blind spot is walking into foreseeable danger like the simple, rather than preparing like the prudent.

This Week's Practice

Name one trouble you can see forming on the horizon. This week, take one concrete step to prepare for it now, in the season of plenty, rather than waiting until it arrives.

It is easy to lead reactively — handling crises only once they hit. Wisdom looks ahead, sees the trouble forming on the horizon, and prepares for it in advance, the way Joseph stored grain in the years of plenty for the years of famine he knew were coming.

What trouble can you already see forming on the horizon — and are you preparing for it now, in the season of plenty, or waiting until it arrives?
