The printing press does the rest
Theses spread across Europe in weeks
Luther writes to a friend in February 1518, three months after nailing the theses: It is a mystery to me how my theses were spread to so many places. They were meant for our academic circle here, not for the whole world.
The printing press has been in operation for sixty years. In that time it has transformed the speed at which ideas travel — but the transformation is not yet fully understood by the people living inside it. No one has yet seen what it does to a theological controversy at exactly the right moment.
Now they find out.
Someone translates the theses from Latin to German. A printer in Nuremberg prints them. Another in Leipzig. Another in Basel. The copies multiply faster than the archbishop can respond, faster than Rome can organize a response, faster than any previous controversy has ever moved.
Within two weeks the theses are across Germany. Within two months, across Europe. Within a year, they have been reprinted dozens of times in multiple languages.
Luther is astonished. He had not imagined this. He is also, he admits, slightly appalled — because the theses were a working document, not a finished theology, and he has reservations about some of the positions he sketched.
But the press does not wait for him to revise.
The indulgence controversy becomes the Reformation controversy becomes the event that splits Western Christendom becomes the world we still inhabit — all because someone translated a Latin academic document and a printer decided it would sell.

Luther released ninety-five theses into a world with a printing press and was astonished by what happened.
The printing press was not Luther's tool — it was God's, working through a technology whose full implications no one had yet grasped. Luther was the right message at the right moment with the right technology, and none of the three was fully under his control.
The word goes out and does not return empty. It accomplishes what God purposes, not what we plan. The person who releases it faithfully may be as surprised as Luther by where it lands.
