Benedict founds his great monastery
Monte Cassino is a mountain in central Italy, rising eleven hundred feet above the valley of the Liri River. On its summit, when Benedict arrives in 529 AD, there is a pagan shrine to Apollo — an altar still in use, a sacred grove, a small community of peasants who worship there.
Benedict destroys the altar. He cuts down the grove. He builds on the summit a chapel to Saint Martin and a chapel to Saint John.
This is not simply religious aggression. It is a statement about permanence. Benedict is not building a temporary community that will move when the abbot dies. He is building something into the stone of a mountain — something meant to outlast him, to outlast the political arrangements around it, to stand as a center of prayer and work and learning for as long as God wills it.
The monastery he builds will be destroyed by the Lombards in 577 AD and rebuilt. Destroyed by the Saracens in 883 AD and rebuilt. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1349 and rebuilt. Destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944 and rebuilt.
It is still there.
Benedict will live at Monte Cassino for the rest of his life. He will die there around 547 AD. His twin sister Scholastica, who leads a community of women in the valley below, dies a few days before him. The tradition says he carries her body up the mountain and buries her in the tomb he has prepared for himself.
When he dies, he is buried with her.

The Benedictine tradition calls this stabilitas — stability, the commitment to one place, one community, one calling for a lifetime. Not novelty and mobility but rootedness and depth.
This is a counter-cultural commitment in every age, but especially in ours. We value options. We distrust permanence. We move toward what is interesting and away from what is difficult.
